Incredible viral footage shows a group of men spinning a top weighing over 1.3 tonnes by continuously whipping it in a bid to get a Guinness World Record.

The 20 hobbyists from the city of Liupanshui, in south-western China’s Guizhou Province, hope their bizarre pastime will enter into the record books.

The traditional toy known in Chinese as a "tuoluo" - the Mandarin for "spinning top" - was enlarged several times until it weighed a stunning 1,306 kilogrammes (2,879 lbs).

To achieve their impressive attempt at spinning the massive top, the toy first had to be held up using a stabilisation device.

While being fixed in place, members of the Liupanshui Tuoluo Association then took turns slapping it with whips, causing the top to slowly turn and gain momentum.

The top was only released from the device after being whipped some 900 times, and it did not spin smoothly on its axis until after receiving more than 1,000 lashes.

The tiring attempt meant that the hobbyists had to form groups and take turns to rest as they whipped it and made it spin at a high speed.

The stunt was witnessed and filmed by several hundred locals, and the association says it has already applied for a Guinness World Record item as the world’s heaviest spinning top.

To be certified, however, the men are likely to be asked to repeat the feat in front of official adjudicators.
