This is the shocking moment wedding pranksters got out of hand by spraying a bridesmaid with a fire extinguisher.

The bizarre incident was caught on camera by an eyewitness with a smartphone at the wedding in the city of Zhaoqing in southern China’s Guangdong Province.

It is a tradition in China for guests to play pranks on the wedding party but this one almost ruined the happy couple's big day.

The groom had to intervene to stop the pranksters as one sprayed a fire extinguisher in the bridesmaid's face.

The poor girl was struggling to breathe from chemical spray and was left with streaming eyes and her hair and dress were covered with white foam.

The bride was upset to see her friend suffer but she had felt unable to do anything to stop the pranksters.

The footage of the incident later proved popular online after it was shared on social media.

Netizen 'Weixin' commented: "Weddings in China are really very vulgar, should we not treat something as important as marriage with more respect?"

Zhaoqing was once one of the most important cities in southern China, but it fell into decline during the Qing dynasty.

It is now primarily known for tourism and as a provincial college town.
