A schoolboy has miraculously survived after leaping from the window of his residential tower and trying to use an umbrella as a parachute like in the cartoons.
The unnamed seven-year-old child was found unconscious and suffering serious injuries after his fall in the city of Suzhou, in East China’s Jiangsu Province.
His parents found him lying on the ground, while witnesses said he jumped with an open red umbrella in his hand, which did little to stop him from crashing to the ground.
The authorities said the boy jumped from the fourth storey of the residential tower. However, because each home comprises two floors, the actual height of the boy’s fall is closer to nine or 10 storeys.
The child was rushed to the Affiliated Children's Hospital of Soochow University, where he underwent extensive surgery.
He is now recovering in the Intensive Care Unit and is not in life-threatening condition, medics said.
The police said the boy’s survival is likely down to the fact that he struck an obstacle on the first floor on his way down, breaking his fall before crashing onto the ground.
They also said the boy admitted he was trying to mimic cartoon characters he had seen on television.
Reports did not say whether the child’s parents would be charged with negligence over the incident, which is the second such case in recent months following a similar attempt by a five-year-old girl in north-western China.
She jumped from an 11th-floor flat and also survived with serious injuries after landing on a terrace on the fourth storey.
